How did The Brazilian Bikini Wax Get its Name?

There are a few urban legends. One rumor states that a Brazilian got its name because of the way that the Brazilian Rainforests are chopped down. That one makes me laugh, even though in reality it’s not that funny! But still renders a chuckle.

Another states that 7 Brazilian sisters came to New York and opened a salon in New York, and it was named after them. And the most popular theory is that women in Brazil began the Brazilian style of waxing of leaving a thin strip of hair in the middle, or removing all hair completely, to wear the ‘newest’ swimsuit of the time, the thong bikini.

What to Expect at a Waxing Appointment

Some people get nervous at the thought of going to see a stranger to have their hair, any hair, ripped off… I don’t know why! (Ripped is too harsh a word, I meant to say gently tugged.) This post will explain exactly how waxing works at Studio Urban Wax, so that you can come in knowing what to expect and not be nervous at all that someone will soon be gently tugging hair from body.

When you set up your appointment for your wax, whether by phone or online, you can choose the body part you want to wax. Rest assured, we have waxed everything, and nothing you choose will be new to us, even if you don’t see it on the list. Women’s and men’s Brazilian bikini waxes, brow waxes, and shoulder and back waxes are very popular right now.

For a women’s bikini wax, you will be prompted to choose between a French Bikini, a Playboy Bikini, and Brazilian Bikini. If you would like something else and are ordering online, choose the one it is closest to, then add your details into the comments box. A French bikini being the most modest, removing the hair on just the sides, then the Playboy Bikini leaves just a landing strip while also removing hair from your backside, and, if you somehow made it to 2010 without watching Sex in the City and don’t know this, a Brazilian removes all hair from the front to the backside.

When you come into the salon for your waxing appointment, you will be ushered into one of our private rooms where you can choose to listen to our lovely music, or plug your own ipod in to the dock on the wall. Then our esthetician will go over with you what hair you want removed, and if you need to undress your underside she will usually leave the room and allow you privacy, discreetly coming back in when the coast is clear. If you are doing a Brazilian bikini then you can choose to wear a pair of disposable unders, or use your own and the esthetician will be careful to protect them from the wax.

Then the esthetician will use the warm European hard wax, check it is the right temperature for your skin, and remove small batches of hair. When your skin is smooth and hair free, she will leave you to dress and meet you at the front of the salon.

Tips For Smooth and Healthy Skin Care After You Wax

Waxing will leave your skin silky smooth, but to keep it that way you’ll need to follow a post care regimen. The regimen is just a few easy steps to keep skin as beautiful and smooth as if you just got the wax. Whether you got a Brazilian bikini wax, or a shoulder and back wax, post care will be the same few easy routines... 

Do the following: 

• Use Tend Skin, a liquid product applied directly to the waxed skin, morning and night for the 3 days following the wax, then once daily afterwards.
• Avoid very hot water, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms for 24 hours after the wax.
• Use an exfoliator, such as an exfoliating towel, with a gentle bath gel on freshly waxed skin to remove dead skin cells and keep hair follicles clear, discouraging ingrown hairs.

Avoid the following:

• Tanning beds and direct sunlight for 24 hours after waxing
• Bar soap that will leave a film on your skin, encouraging ingrown hairs
• Harsh products with heavy perfumes or dyes for 48 hours, or until skin feels ready for them
• Waxing can lead to enlarged pores for a day or so, so for a day or so, avoid any activity that will cause friction to the area and keep it clean and protected 

Following these few tips will help keep your beautifully waxed skin smooth and irritation free for 4-8 weeks, leaving you free to enjoy and show off your sexy smooth skin!

One of our fantastic services, that does just this, is eyelash and eyebrow tinting.     

The subtle tint, ranging from light brown to deep black, can be applied to top and bottom lashes to match your hair, or a bit darker, and look natural. An all natural, vegetable-based dye, it is completely safe. The purpose is to make the eyes pop. And it really works. Experience of a First Time Bikini Waxer

A client came into Studio Urban Wax  to receive a French Bikini Wax on Thursday and was kind enough to share her experience. Out of our 3 usual bikini waxes, French Bikini, Playboy Bikini, and Brazilian Bikini, the French Bikini removes the least hair.

She decided to start with this one because, as she said, she was 'just a touch nervous.' She had taken 2 ibuprofen as a precaution, as she really didn't know what to expect. I'll tell you now, so you don't have to scan to the bottom, in her words it 'really didn't hurt that much. It was actually quite relaxing!'

She is a stay at home mom so rarely gets the time to lay back and be pampered, and considered waxing relaxing and refreshing! She swears she was only on ibuprofen… uh, hmmm. Just kidding! 

No really, she said she ‘enjoyed going to the salon and taking care of her body, and making it easier for herself in the mornings, too!’

When asked what she thought of the studio she exclaimed it was ‘gorgeous and relaxing. The rooms were clean, the bed comfortable, and everything we just wonderful, and I loved plugging my ipod into the room.’

The waxing took about 20 minutes and she said that ‘Rebekah explained the process in such great detail I never felt unsure about what was going on, and she was incredibly knowledgeable about waxing, and all skin care and beauty care.

"I am a bit of a nervous nelly and some would even call me a chicken. Waxing for me had maybe a total of 1 minute of discomfort, and that is probably on the generous side.' After her appointment she went home with a bottle of Tend Skin and directions to use it to ward off ingrown hairs and to exfoliate and enjoy!"

A week after her wax she said she was still ‘smooth, and a complete waxing convert.’ She used to shave and has proclaimed she ‘will never go back, and is considering waxing her legs.’ As you continue waxing you will feel less discomfort because the follicles will continue to be damaged and hair will be weaker sparser.

Shaving Is Just a Quick Fix

Shaving will get the job done, and it will get it done quick.  But you have to be very careful to get a smooth shave. If you want your skin smooth and hair free, you need to soak it, use the correct shaving gel for your skin, and shave slowly against the hair with a sharp razor.

Many people do not have time for this everyday, and that is where the problems occur. Patches are missed, (don't you hate that? When I used to shave I would always miss my ankle, and not notice it until I was out), skin is gashed and left with a scab, or the shave just isn't close enough and your left with sharp stubbles. So much for smooth skin.

 

Speaking of stubble, shaving cuts hairs at it's thickest part, so when it grows back it is coarser and rougher than before. And it will look darker, too, because the thick pinpoints of hair growing back are more noticeable.

Waxing, however, will pull your hair out at it's root, therefore the hair that grows back will be thinner and finer, and much less noticeable. It begins growing back at the follicle, so when the hair emerges, weeks later, it is tapered and less obvious, finer and softer.

The two different methods provide two very different results. With shaving hair grows back faster and the hair is coarse and thick. With waxing the hair grows back weeks later than shaving, and it grows back finer and softer.

Waxing will get you silky smooth with no bleeding, and no thick, sharp, ugly regrowth the next day. Leg Waxing

With temperatures rising into the 90s, summer in Denver is in full swing!  Perhaps you are interested in some maintenance free grooming to go along with your shades, shorts and sunblock, well how about a leg waxing?

If you are considering a leg wax, here are some helpful tips:

Exfoliate your legs using a coarse washcloth, a body scrub, or your handy exfoliating mitts to remove any buildup of dead skin cells prior to your appointment. And please no lotion beforehand.

Grow your hair so it is ¼ inch long!   It is very important so the wax has something to grab onto.  If not, you are left with stubble and who wants that?  Sometimes this can be 2-3 weeks for some people..depending on how fast your hair grows…

Use sunblock afterwards because your skin is exfoliated and can be more sun-sensitive.

And mostly, ENJOY your smooth, sexy legs without the burden of taking the extra time to shave in the shower.  Over time, you will notice considerably softer, finer hair and say goodbye to the alligator legs that come along with shaving.

Tend Skin Liquid Effective for Post Waxing Home Care

Tend Skin is a reputable line made for post-care waxing for both women and men that is clinically effective for handling in-grown hairs as well as quickly reducing redness after waxing. 

Since waxing involves the removal of the entire hair follicle from the root, dead skin build-up naturally occurs over the hair follicle, potentially clogging new hair growth.   When the follicle is clogged, its like having a plant grow through cement -- won't happen!
